RUNNERS' CLUB OF GREATER CINCINNATI BOARD MEETING MINUTES
April 5, 2009, 1:30 p.m.
Bob Roncker’s Running Spot, Cincinnati, OH

Members Present: Tom Glascock, Julia Glasscock, Todd Hofacre, Ed Hunter, Ryan Woolley

Meeting Minutes: Minutes from the March 1 Board Meeting were approved with addition of a sentence that Ryan suggested the possibility of doing a race on September 9, 2009 (9-9-09) (more information below).

Membership: 72 members so far have paid their dues for 2009. Todd will send out renewal reminder emails next week to those who have not yet renewed. Membership cards were sent out last week.

Newsletter: The deadline for articles for the next issue is April 15. The featured runner will be Kelly Edmundson, women’s winner of the Valentine’s Day Race. Todd will include some photos that Ed took at our Heart Mini-marathon hospitality rooms on March 29.

Website: Marty will update our race survey page. This page has not been updated since 2005. Some races currently listed are no longer held. Ed has emailed photos to Marty from the Mini-marathon hospitality rooms.

Social: Nothing new to report.

Annual Meeting: Will be Monday, April 13, 2009, at Swaim Park Lodge. Refreshments (free food and beverages) will be available at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will start at 7:00 p.m. The key agenda item will be the election of officers and Board members for the coming year. Laura Wagner is willing to be an at-large member. Jeff Sprague is considering becoming a Board member again. Todd is willing to be President for one more year. We need at least 10 members to be present for the meeting to be official. Todd may ask Steve Adkisson, author of the new book, Juggernauts (recapping his running career during the 1970s at Lloyd High School in Erlanger, KY) to be the featured speaker.

Races:
Heart Mini-marathon recap: Members (about 20) who used the two hospitality rooms at the Westin expressed their appreciation. However, the rooms were too small, and we ordered too much food. Next year we should have plastic bags available for members to take home food if there is extra. There was confusion at the front desk about who was authorized to receive key cards to operate the elevators. Thanks to Nancy Zadek and Mike for helping with clean-up.

Flying Pig Marathon (6:30 a.m., Sunday, May 3, 2009): A group of students (perhaps around 20) from St. Henry High School’s National Honor Society (Elsmere, KY) will help again this year at the water stop. We will pay them $150. The UC Running Club may provide several volunteers. Five other volunteers have signed up to help. Todd will contact the owner of the house near where the water stop will be set up to see if we can use their outside spigot to obtain water to mix Gatorade and to hand out to runners. Ed recently sent photos he took at the 2007 water stop to Brian Alden, who is collecting photos for a “Miles of Smiles” exhibit for the Marathon expo this year.

Memorial Day Race (5K, 9 a.m., Monday, May 25, 2009, Armleder Park): The course (same as last year’s) needs to be certified. Flyers will be available at the Annual Meeting. We will not put flyers in the Flying Pig Marathon race bags because it would be very expensive to do so. We will offer technical shirts for sale, possibly white with red and blue printing (design to be established).

Eek Keller Run (5K, possibly in November, Winton Woods Park): The Powel Crosley, Jr., YMCA (in Finneytown) is interested in holding such a race with our help. They have not yet established a date but tentatively would like to use a Saturday in November. Todd indicated we would charge them $2.00 per runner to do timing and man the finish line. The Y would keep any sponsorship money they might solicit. Ed will contact Donna Weber at Winton Woods Park to determine how we can reserve a shelter and use a portion of the walking/biking path for the course.

Trail Run in August (“Mid-summer Nights Trail Run,” approximately 5 miles, Wednesday, August 5 or August 12, 2009, Mt. Airy Forest): This would be a low-key, race day registration only race with awards to the top 5 men and top 5 women. Cost would be $5.00 for Club members, $10 for nonmembers. Details and course need to be determined.

The 9 on 9/9/09 (9 km [5.59 miles], 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, September 9, 2009, Lunken Airport bike trail): Ryan suggested arranging such a race like the Club did in past years on July 7, 2007, and August 8, 2008. We will try to reserve “Spirit of 76” Shelter. Armleder Park would be a possible back-up location.

Scholarships: Nothing new.

Group Runs: Todd plans to move the starting location of spring group runs to It’s Just Crepes, on Court Street between Main and Walnut. During this past winter, the group runs originated in Hyde Park.

Programs/Seminars: Todd would like initiate periodic special programs/seminars for interested Club members, possibly at Swaim Park Lodge. One topic might include “Race Directing and how to use ‘Run Score,’” by Greg McCormick, who directs numerous local races.

Next Board Meeting: Thursday, April 30, 2009, 6:30 p.m., at Starbucks in Rookwood Commons.

Respectfully submitted,
Ed Hunter (substituting for Monica)
